The non-profit organization serves more than 450 households by providing healthy food, emergency heating services, housing assistance, economic mobility, and more.

Families in crisis in the Winchendon area will soon have more resources at their disposal, as the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce will provide the Winchendon Community Action Committee with a $216,000 loan from its real estate development fund to create a new facility known as the Winchendon Works Community Hub.

The new community hub will be located at 5 Summer Drive in space formerly used by Playaway Bowling Alley. This new larger space will allow WCAC to expand its services to include youth empowerment programs, a grocery store for those struggling with food insecurity, and increased services for individuals who are facing chronic health issues, according to a release issued by NCMCC on Thursday.

“As the need for equitable access to healthy food, housing, and economic mobility grows, the WCAC is expanding to answer the call,” Miranda Jennings, executive director of WCAC, said in the press release.

The loan will be provided by the North Central Massachusetts Development Corp., the economic development arm of the chamber, as part of its Regional Business Investment Fund, with Athol Savings Bank helping to facilitate the loan.

The Regional Business Investment Fund aims to encourage more real estate development in the North Central Massachusetts region. Launched in November, funds from this initiative have already been put toward providing necessary safety upgrades to the Dickinson Building in downtown Fitchburg.

These low or no-cost financing options are designed to be flexible loans covering costs not typically covered by other lenders, according to a November release issued by NCMCC.
