The Town of North Brookfield has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue cleanup at the 5.5-acre site of the former Aztec Asbestos Co. on Grove Street.
The grant, available under the EPA's Brownfield's Program, was announced in a press conference in North Brookfield Friday morning. According to the EPA, North Brookfield received $1.5 million in grant funding previously to pay for demolition and assessment at the Aztec site, which produced asbestos-based textiles before it closed.
The goal is to eradicate contamination and redevelop the property for future use, according to the EPA. Two former Aztec parcels are now occupied by a new police station.
The EPA said it has issued 213 cleanup grants totaling $47 million across New England since the program's inception.
