Major changes will be coming to the Worcester to Boston commuter train line this May with the announcement Wednesday that a nonstop train will begin operating into Boston.

“For the first time ever, nonstop train service between Worcester and Boston in under one hour will become a reality,” Lt. Gov. Polito, said at Union station earlier today, according to a release from her office. “The new schedule will give commuters more options on an improved schedule that reflect the needs of today for both our residents and our economy.”

One nonstop train will leave Union Station at 7:55 a.m. and arrive at Back Bay Station in less than an hour, according to the release. Two express trains will also be added in each direction every day.

The nonstop train will mean approximately 30 minutes shaved off of the commute for Worcester riders. The existing trip takes about 1.5 hours and can stop as many as 16 times, according to the release.

Once fully implemented, the Worcester/Framingham schedule will include 11 Boston-bound trains for the weekday morning commute, with seven of those trains originating in Union Station, with one train making all local stops on the line; five trains running zone express; and one train running nonstop to Back Bay Station, according to the release. The current schedule only includes three zone express trains within that window.

In the evening hours, the new schedule will include nine trains leaving South Station, with six ending at Union Station. Of those six, five will be zone express, and one will run nonstop from Back Bay Station. Three additional trains leaving South Station will end in Framingham.
