Sixty-four at-risk youth in Worcester and Quincy will receive job training through $1 million in federal funding, Training Resources of America Inc. announced.
The funding from the Labor Department, announced Friday, will allow the Worcester-based nonprofit to continue operations of its YouthBuild program over the next three years.
According to TRA President Kim Harmon, the youths will participate in four, low-income housing projects with Worcester’s Main South CDC and Neighborhood Housing Services of South Shore.
YouthBuild provides training to low-income, out-of-school youths between the ages of 16 and 24 who show willingness to work for personal and community change. Students receive instruction in GED preparation, self-esteem, life, leadership and work readiness skills, community service opportunities, and construction skills training utilizing a community housing rehab or new construction project which adds to the stock of quality low-income housing, TRA said. Students can also earn OSHA and Home Builders Institute Pre-Apprenticeship certifications and access permanent employment, and higher education opportunities.
YouthBuild has been one of TRA’s programs in Worcester since 1999 and in Quincy since 2001 and has served more than 600 youth who have helped build or renovate 350 low-income housing units, the organization said.
