NewVue Communities, a Fitchburg-based community development corp. serving northern Worcester County, received a $726,000 grant from the Massachusetts Underutilized Properties Program for new roofs on three historic buildings that are a part of the organization’s plan to create artist space in downtown Fitchburg, according to the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development website.

NewVue Communities, in partnership with the Fitchburg Art Museum, is redeveloping the former B.F. Brown Middle School, and the former Academy Street School Annex, as well as former city stables into 68 units of artist-preference housing, studio space, and gallery space across the street from the museum on Elm Street, Academy Street and High Street.

"We are grateful for MassDevelopment’s support for the Fitchburg Arts Community. MassDevelopment has been a critical partner in Fitchburg’s efforts to take advantage of local assets to become a Gateway to Arts and Culture," said Marc Dohan, executive director of NewVue Communities via email.

The project is part of a larger push to revitalize Fitchburg’s downtown area using the arts as a focus.

The Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development’s Community One Stop for Growth delivers funding from 12 state economic development programs. This year’s round of funding included $143 million in grants, including $100 million from MassWorks, according to a press release from the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development.
