Newspaper ad revenue flags

Despite a 35 percent fourth quarter jump in online advertising, overall ad revenue for newspapers remained flat in 2006, according to a report from the Newspaper Association of America.

For the full year, print retail dipped 0.3 percent to $22.2 billion. Online ad revenue for the year shot up 31.5 percent, reaching a new high of nearly $2.7 billion.

The growth rate of newspaper internet advertising in 2006 was about the same as the previous year, but still lagged behind the 34 percent overall growth rate in total internet advertising.

The largest decline for newspapers was in print classifieds advertising, which fell 7.1 percent to $4.9 billion.

Many newspapers have looked to online companies like Maynard-based Monster Worldwide Inc. for help with online job-search business.
