The Boston Surface Railroad Co. announced Monday morning it would begin a bus service between Worcester and Providence in February as it ramps up to its commuter rail service between the two cities.
“This is to stimulate ridership, get people aware of our brand and reaffirm our commitment to providing transportation services in the Blackstone Valley,” said Vincent Bono, president of Boston Surface Railroad, who explained the ultimate goal for the company is the rail service.
Initially, however, the company will run four morning buses from Worcester to Providence with a stop in Woonsocket with four evening return trips. The service will begin in February with tickets able to be purchased beginning in January.
The company’s rail service will begin testing in late 2020 or early 2021. Following that three to six month testing phase, the company plans to launch the service in full with a plan for four morning and four evening trains to mirror the initial bus service.
The service was first announced in 2015 and received regulator approval in 2016.
