The New England Council will honor the incoming CEO of Waters Corp., Udit Batra, as well as Congressman Jim McGovern, at its annual New Englander of the Year celebration on Oct. 26, the business advocacy group announced on Tuesday.
Batra is set to take over the Milford life sciences technology company in September, the company announced in July.
The New England Council cited Batra’s professional successes, particularly as former CEO of MilliporeSigma, the life science business of Germany’s Merck KGaA, as well as a record for championing education for low-income students, promoting women’s leadership and increasing diversity at organizations he has led.
McGovern, in turn, is the longtime representative for the state’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes much of Worcester County and the Pioneer Valley. He chairs the House Rules Committee.
The council highlighted McGovern's record for fighting against food hunger and insecurity, particularly in his position as a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee. The council pointed to his roles as a co-chair on the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission and chairman of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, where the council said he has fought to protect human rights around the world.
Marianne Harrison, the CEO of Boston financial services firm John Hancoc; Ibram X. Kendi, the founder of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research; and former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power will also be honored at the ceremony, which will be held online at 4 p.m. on Oct. 26.
The New Englander of the Year awards have been presented annually since 1964.
