A new company, Allied Resin Technologies (Artech), has teamed up with Leominster’s First Plastics Corp. to bring rotational manufacturing of large plastic goods and up to 50 new jobs to the city.
The new rotational molding company began production in June — already employing 12 with plans to employ up to 50 by the end of the year, according to Ed Mazzaferro, the owner of injection molding company First Plastics. Artech is using space owned by First Plastics.
The partnership brings the potential for new product lines, including the manufacture of large plastic items such as kayaks, paddle boards and car bumpers. Artech is already producing a proprietary line of decorative flowerpots, with 450 molds on site ranging up to planters capable of tree plantings, and other garden décor items that it wholesales directly to retailers and distributors.
“We're already in the process of expanding our lawn and garden line, and plan to develop more proprietary items in a variety of other categories such as housewares, sports equipment, outdoor, and industrial, to name a few,” Simona La Posta, sales manager for Artech, said.
Rotational molding, also called rotomolding, involves using a machine to rotate plastic material on an axis, forcing the material to stick to the mold's walls.
The two companies' partnership brings high-tech manufacturing and new skill-set requirements to Leominster, according to Lisa Marrone, the city’s economic development coordinator.
“The city of Leominster has been in full support of this collaboration between the companies and worked closely with the partners for the municipal requirements,” Marrone said, noting that manufacturing is a round-the-clock industry and that Leominster-made products are distributed globally.
First Plastics, in Leominster since 1988, employs more than 100 people in a 120,000-square-foot manufacturing facility.
