Firm eyes growth and enlists coaching firm
After two generations of the Lian family at the helm of Lian, Zarrow, Eynon & Shea, the Worcester-based law firm has elected a new managing partner from outside the family blood line.
John Shea, who's been with the firm since 1990, officially took over as managing partners at the six-attorney firm on Sept. 1. However, he was elected by the firm's four other partners in December 2006.
Shea takes over for Robert Lian, who has been managing partner at the firm for the past 18 years. He remains chairman of the firm and will continue to practice law. It was Robert Lian's father George Lian who co-founded the firm with George Yagjian in the mid-1940s.
Shea described the firm as "progressive" in its outlook on both technology and governance. To that end, the firm has begun working with Kathy Esper Enterprises of Westborough on a strategy "to improve the firm's overall performance, both professionally and personally."
"We're at the beginning of the process," Shea said of working with the coaching firm, "so it's hard to give specifics. But we certainly want growth in terms of revenue and profitability."
Shea said the firm has historically included between four and seven attorneys. He said increasing the firm in terms of number of attorneys is a possibility. However, he said any increase in staffing would not be for the sake of "having more bodies," but rather "to provide critical services."
Shea lives in Worcester and is chairman of the city's planning board and of the board of Community Healthlink (an affiliate of the University of Massachusetts Memorial Health Care System). He is a graduate of Assumption College and Boston University School of Law.
