New home sales up in April

The U.S. Department of Commerce said the sale of single-family homes in April increased to a seasonally adjusted rate of 981,000.

The rate is 16.2 percent above the department's revised March rate of 844,000, and 10.6 percent below the April 2006 estimate of 1,097,000.

According to the department, the median sale price of a new home sold in April was $229,100.
The seasonally adjusted estimate of new homes for sale at the end of April was 538,000, a 6.5-month supply at the current sale rate.
