New England Unemployment Flat In June

The Northeast's unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 7.8 percent in June, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

That rate was down slightly from 7.9 percent in May and down from 8.5 percent in June 2010.

The year-over-year change is not statistically significant because the estimates are preliminary and fall within the margin of error, according to Tim Consedine, a BEA economist.

New England's unemployment rate remains lower than that of the country, which was 9.2 percent in June. The Northeast region, too, which includes New England and the Middle Atlantic states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, remained below the national average in June at 8.1 percent.

The Pacific region fared the worst in the country in June at 11 percent unemployment.
