New England small businesses are cautiously hopeful about hiring and pay levels in 2011, according to a new survey by Insight Performance Inc. and the Smaller Business Association of New England.
The survey found that only 5 percent of small businesses in the region anticipate the possibility of layoffs this year. Eighty-three percent of the companies either retained existing staff or made new hires in 2010, and 93 percent say that's their plan for 2011.
Just 38 percent of companies say they're planning to increase base-pay rates this year, compared with 43 percent who said they planned to do so at the beginning of 2010. But the percentage of companies planning to freeze base pay declined to 23 percent this year, compared with 41 percent last year.
Companies are much happier with employee morale this year, with 83 percent of respondents saying their workers are confident about their jobs, compared to 47 percent last year.
