The U.S. Army Garrison in Natick, located at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center, recently saw a change in command.
Outgoing commander Col. Gregory J. Ulsh passed the baton to incoming Lt. Col. Kari K. Otto.
Otto said her new position is the "opportunity of a lifetime." And she pointed out that the work of the soldier centers is unlike any other. "You take tomorrow's technology and make it reality today," she said.
Otto brings three years of experience with the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, which has six offices, including Natick's. The command oversees installation construction, barracks and family housing, as well as family care, food management, environmental programs, soldier and family well-being and morale, recreation programs, logistics, public works and installation funding.
The Natick center works closely with companies and academic institutions to conduct research and development for future military clothing, food, shelter and airdrop systems that can better protect soldiers.
The center has 124 buildings on 174 acres in Natick and its history dates back to October 1949 when its Quartermaster Research Facility was built.
