New Balance, the Brighton-based footwear and apparel company, is making a multi-year financial gift to support the growth of Worcester Academy’s south campus, which will now be named in honor of the company.
Now named the New Balance Performance Park, the campus contains the Capozzoli Athletic Center, which is under construction with an expected completion in 2025. The new athletic center was the result of a $20-million donation from commercial real estate developer and businessman Ron Capozzoli.
Worcester Academy declined to disclose the dollar amount of the New Balance donation. The deal will see Worcester Academy varsity athletes wearing uniforms supplied by New Balance in this upcoming season.
“The south campus property has long been vital to the City of Worcester, first as a family farm and later as the site of Saint Vincent Hospital. Since adding Morse Field and the performance center, this pivotal parcel has stood still,” Kevin Breen, the academy’s head of school, said in a Friday press release announcing the donation. “Now we are ready to move forward with a complete center that provides athletes and artists first class facilities at New Balance Performance Park.”
The park, which Worcester Academy says will remain open and available for community use, contains the under-construction athletic center, a newly renovated synthetic turf athletic field, and the school’s performance center, containing a black box theater.
"It's an honor for New Balance to be welcomed into the Worcester Academy and Greater Worcester community,” Chris Davis, New Balance’s brand president and chief marketing officer, said in the release.
Founded in 1906, New Balance generated $6.5 billion in annual sales during 2023, according to Footwear News.
