A Billerica medical device company will start production at its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Acton starting in 2019 and expects to hire hundreds of jobs there over the next five years, the company announced Wednesday.
Insulet Corporation said its new 201,000 square foot facility, purchased for $9.25 million, will allow it to produce up to 70 percent more pods on a single line with a 90 percent lower headcount compared to all four of the lines at its current contract manufacturer in China. The plant is located on 25 acres of land, giving Insulet the ability to expand further.
In a press release, Insulet Chairman and CEO Patrick Sullivan said adding a U.S. manufacturing facility will help the company improve its response time to customers.
