Selling a greater volume of dairy products at lower prices brought the second quarter profit of Dean Foods, parent company of Franklin-based Garelick Farms, up 31 percent to $64 million and its sales for the quarter down 14 percent to $2.7 billion.
The Dallas, Texas-based conglomerate said fluid milk volume was up 2.4 percent during the quarter.
The company said low raw milk and energy costs, efforts to control spending and volume growth led to an operating profit of $169 million, a 9 percent increase over the same period a year ago.
