National Unemployment Remains Steady

Though the economy gained 162,000 jobs in March, the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.7 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

Job gains were seen in the temporary employment, health and government sectors, including 48,000 people who were hired to help complete the 2010 Census.

The construction industry held steady in employment from February to March after losing, on average, 72,000 jobs per month for the last year.

Manufacturing jobs posted modest gains with 17,000 new jobs in March, bringing the total to 45,000 new jobs since 2010 began.

The financial services sector lost 21,000 jobs in March.
