National Grid is seeking to add 14 megawatts of solar generation to its existing 21 megawatt portfolio and test emerging solar technologies.
Among those technologies will be a battery storage project at its solar generation facilities in Everett and Shirley, according to the company.
A recent study has said that energy storage could save the state $800 million in the year 2025. Looking at this new technology is essential as the company moves towards modernizing the state’s energy grid, said Carlos Nouel, vice president of new energy solutions at National Grid.
The company announced Wednesday it had submitted a proposal to the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities for the new solar project. If approved, the company will work with third parties to locate and build the solar arrays and associated new technologies by December 2017.
The program is not strictly focused on generating energy, according to National Grid, but testing new technologies. In that vein, this new solar generation will feature sun tracking systems, solar canopies, and additional energy storage.
