National Grid, whose electricity and gas territory covers most of Central Massachusetts, said it is preparing for widespread and prolonged power outages as a result of the snow that has already started falling today.
"We continue to monitor the weather and are taking action now to be able to respond quickly and safely to potential outages that could occur. Our pre-planning activities are in anticipation of a very damaging storm," said Kathy Lyford, vice president of the utility's New England operations. "We take the safety of the public and our employees very seriously. We are reaching out to our life support and critical care customers and have plans in place to provide regular updates for customers."
As of 10:52 a.m., National Grid was reporting no outages in its Massachusetts territories.
The utility is asking those who lose power to report the outage by calling 1-800-465-1212
A number of area businesses have used social media to tell customers they are closing early or postponing events.
The DCU Center has postponed a Chris Daughtry and 3 Doors Down concert this evening until Monday, it posted on Twitter.
Also on Twitter, Webster First Federal Credit Union said it closed its branches at 11:30 a.m. today and also said they would be closed Saturday. Avidia Bank said its branches will close at 2 p.m.
The Worcester Art Museum posted on Facebook that it is closed for today and that scheduled classes for today and Saturday are cancelled.
Old Sturbridge Village said it will be closed today and Saturday. And the Blackstone Valley Shoppes tweeted that some stores are closing early today and that shoppers should call ahead.
