National Grid will work with Washington-state smart-grid and utility management company Itron Inc., as well as Cisco Systems Inc., in building and evaluating new smart grid infrastructure in Massachusetts, Itron said.
National Grid is running a pilot smart grid program in Worcester, developing new ways to track and control electricity use.
Itron said National Grid will use its meters and a smart grid architecture that combines Itron and Cisco technology. The architecture offers the ability to meter energy use in more precise ways than standard systems and to automate distribution to respond to demand.
