As part of a “long-planned” succession effort at National Grid, Tom King, president and executive director, will be leaving National Grid March 31, 2015, and will be replaced by Dean Seavers, a former GE and United Technologies executive, the company announced Thursday.

The official start date for Seavers at the utility, which services a majority of Central Mass., is December 1, 2014 allowing the two to work together on the transition for four months, National Grid said.

Seavers joins National Grid after a career that has included leadership roles at GE, United Technologies, and Tyco, according to the utility.

King will remain on the board of National Grid until March 31, 2015, at which time he will be succeeded by Seavers as U.S. president and executive director
