National Grid Flying Toward Sun

Waltham-based utility National Grid plans to install solar power generation systems on state buildings and public schools across the state.

The company said it filed a plan to develop and own new solar generation facilities with the state Department of Public Utilities under the state's Green Communities Act. The act allows utilities to develop and own up to 50 megawatts of solar generating facilities by 2010.

National Grid said it would spend $38 million on its four initial solar installations at company-owned facilities in Revere, Dorchester, Everett and Haverhill. Beyond that, the company would install, own and maintain facilities on customer-owned properties like government buildings and schools across the state.

The installations at schools would promote "solar education and science curricula," the company said.
