National Grid was fined $1.25 million for alleged gas pipeline safety violations on Cape Cod.
The company, which is one of Central Massachusetts’ natural gas and electricity providers, was fined Friday by the state Department of Public Utilities’ Pipeline Engineering and Safety Division, according to Katie Gronendyke, press secretary for the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
According to the Cape Cod Times, the issue surrounded safety procedures and gas lines that were over-pressurized for 16 years. There is currently a moratorium on new gas hookups in the region, according to the paper.
National Grid spokesperson Jake Navarro said in a statement that the company respects the Department’s analysis and will fully comply with its decision.
“Our natural gas system is operating safely, and we continuously invest in our infrastructure to ensure the safety and reliability of our system for the 112,000 customers we serve on Cape Cod, and throughout our service territory,” he said.
