National Grid has proposed a new site in Worcester’s Tatnuck area for a specialized communications tower.
The electric utility has applied for special permits to site a 90-foot tower on a property it owns at 597 Mill St.
National Grid spokeswoman Deborah Drew said the location allows for an unblocked flow of communications, plus the commercial setting would minimize disturbances to neighbors. Nearby tree-lined streets would make it hard to see the structure except in close proximity, Drew said.
The Worcester zoning board will hold a public hearing on the proposal Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Levi Lincoln Chamber at City Hall.
A proposal to site the tower on Tory Fort Lane in Tatnuck was scuttled in August after it ran into fierce opposition from nearby residents.
The tower is part of a National Grid pilot program to install communications towers in four parts of Worcester to allow for data about customer electricity usage to be easily passed along. Towers have already been approved in the Vernon Hill, Greendale and Lake Park areas.
