BDO USA, a Chicago-based accounting firm with more than 75 locations nationwide, has closed its Gardner office.
The Gardner location, based at 55 Lake St., was first opened in 1924 as the firm’s first office in New England, according to an archived version of BDO’s website available via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.
Weblinks to the page for the firm’s Gardner office now lead to information about the firm’s Boston office. BDO’s other remaining New England office is located in Stamford, Connecticut.
"While the BDO Gardner office has closed, we are dedicated to businesses in Massachusetts which can continue to benefit from the resources and amenities of our Boston office and strength of BDO’s practices and presence across the country," a BDO spokesperson told WBJ. "Local BDO professionals will continue to leverage the firm’s longstanding and progressive approach to flexibility, intentionally collaborating with their teams to determine where and how they work based on their firm and client responsibilities."
BDO had a staff of 320, including 120 certified public accountants, in Massachusetts as of last year, according to information BDO provided to the WBJ Research Department in 2023.
BDO USA, P.C., is a member of BDO International Limited, a UK company limited by guarantee, and forms part of the international BDO network of independent member firms.
CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the number of employees at BDO's Gardner office. This number reflected the total number of BDO employees in Massachusetts, not the Gardner office, but was based on survey information sent to WBJ by BDO in 2022 and 2023 that were supposed to reflect local Central Massachusetts employment figures. This article has also been updated to reflect that BDO is a member of BDO International Limited and not owned by BDO Global. This article has also been updated to include a quote from BDO.
