The national unemployment rate rose to 9.9 percent in April after holding at 9.7 percent for the first three months of the year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Despite the rise in the unemployment rate, the country added 290 million jobs.
The unemployment rate grew because about 805,000 new workers entered the work force in April, a 0.3 percent increase from a month earlier and a 0.6 percent increase since the beginning of the year.
The manufacturing sector added 44,000 jobs in April while construction added 14,000 jobs. That compares to the construction industry adding 26,000 jobs the month prior. Health care added 20,000 jobs and the federal government added 66,000 jobs to help conduct the 2010 Census.
About 46 percent of unemployed workers have been looking for work for more than 27 weeks.
