Parcell Laboratories, a Natick-based provider of stem cell therapeutics, announced Wednesday that it’s partnering with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to study a new stem cell-based wrinkle reduction treatment.
Parcell and UPMC are conducting a study comparing the effectiveness of “off the shelf” early lineage adult (ELA) stem cells to cells extracted from a patient’s own fatty deposits in reducing wrinkles. This would enable surgeons to implant stem cells without an initial extraction procedure, Parcell said, resulting in a one-step treatment option for patients.
“Our collaboration with the UPMC will explore whether these differentiators would make the ELA cell an idea alterative to today’s most common treatment for wrinkle reduction,” said Colin White, Parcell’s chief scientific officer, in a statement.
Parcell said stem cell-based wrinkle reduction therapies are preferable to the more common botulinum toxin - or Botox - based treatments since stem cells augment the body’s natural ability to heal without using large doses of external compounds.
“The potential of stem cell-based therapies to repair dermal tissue, whether scars or wrinkles, deserves serious exploration and we hope that our collaboration with Parcell … will lead to better therapies in this clinical area,” said Kasey Marra, co-director of UPMC’s Adipose Stem Cell Center, in a statement.
