The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued a demand for Ayer food production company Nasoya Foods to pay $5,000 for air pollution violations.
This is the fourth time MassDEP has issued Nasoya penalties for causing pollution through the release of odorous sulfur compounds from its tofu manufacturing plant.
A 2017 consent order penalized Nasoya $27,360 for the same odor violations, according to MassDEP. The company then made improvements to the air scrubber system, submitted a long-range plan for odor control, and committed to not causing pollution. Nasoya installed a regenerative thermal oxidizer to control the odorous emissions.
However, MassDEP still received numerous complaints subsequently confirmed by the company’s on-call consultant or the local board of health.
“Nasoya has installed the new air pollution control equipment and received the new air permit from MassDEP to operate it,” said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, in a press release. “The company, however, is still on notice through these penalty demands that it must operate the facility without creating a condition of air pollution.”
