More than 120 registered nurses at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer have voted overwhelmingly to join the state’s largest nurses’ union, the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA), the union said.
The 123 RNs at the hospital, owned by Steward Healthcare, cast their ballots last week.
"This is so big for our patients," Sue Fluet, an emergency department nurse, said in a statement from the MNA. "We're so excited. We finally get to have a say in patient care."
In the wake of the economic downturn, coupled with changes in the industry being driven by federal health care reform, the MNA said its organizing division is fielding a significant increase in calls from non-union nurses.
The MNA said it already represents more than 2,800 nurses and health care professionals at eight other Steward hospitals: Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, Norwood Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton, Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Morton Hospital in Taunton and Quincy Medical Center.
An attempt to reach a spokesperson at Steward on Monday morning was unsuccessful.
