The Worcester Branch of the NAACP has put its weight behind an effort to require companies receiving a Tax Increment Financing deal from the city to hire more people of color, women and low-income employees to full-time positions.
The branch voted at its March meeting to support the recommendations by the Worcester Community Labor Coalition (WCLC) into a draft of guidelines for the tax deals, which are often used to help bring businesses to the city with the understanding the companies will hire local, the organization announced in a press release. The current TIF proposal for Worcester includes requiring companies to hire 10 percent minority, 5 percent women and 15 percent low-income people into full-time positions. The WCLC’s recommendations are for 50 percent women, 33 percent people of color and 35 percent of low-income residents.
The local NAACP branch said that although the administration has said these requirements would be adjusted in the future, they agreed with the WCLC that they should be included in a draft set to be voted on by the City Council on April 26.
The NAACP also voted in support of requirements that would increase the amount of construction work to be completed by women and people of color to 6.9 percent and 15.3 percent respectively.
