Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner received a $500,000 Skills Capital Grant to upgrade equipment and facilities for its nursing program, as part of $32 million in grants from the Massachusetts state government to address workforce development.
The funds will be used to expand and upgrade two simulated health science labs and accompanying control and debriefing rooms for its nursing programs, the college announced on Tuesday.
"Simulation labs are a critical component of modern nursing education. High-fidelity simulation experiences give students the opportunity to apply theory to practice in a safe, hands-on learning environment,” Kim Shea, MWCC dean of nursing, said in a press release. “Through simulation, students can engage in diverse clinical experiences that they may not have access to in the traditional clinical practicum setting. This grant allows us to expand the access students have to this valuable education tool.”
The Skills Capital Grant program was launched in 2015 with the goal of replacing outdated equipment and technology, mainly at vocational technical high schools and community colleges. The program is overseen by the Massachusetts Workforce Skills Cabinet, a joint venture of the Executive Offices of Education, Labor and Workforce Development, and Housing and Economic Development.
Demand for nurses remains high because of an aging population and nurses leaving the workforce amid the high demands of the COVID pandemic.
