MWCC opens dental assistant enrollment

Mount Wachusett Community College is expanding enrollment for its dental assistant program.

Mount Wachusett Community College is dropping selective enrollment requirements for its dental assisting certificate and opening the program to anyone who wants to join.

Massachusetts is facing a shortage of qualified dental assistants because of a change in requirements, according to Michael Meyer, dental director for Community Health Connections with MWCC. Dentists used to be able to train assistants on the job, but today, candidates have to meet educational and certification requirements before they’re hired.

Dental assistants can make between $15.17 and $27.30 per hour, according to MWCC. Employment in the field is expected to grow by 6.4 percent over the next four years.

Students can obtain their dental assistant certificate in one year at MWCC’s Fitchburg campus, according to a press release. Dental assistants typically help dentists during procedures, take dental x-rays and impressions and perform various lab procedures.
