Mount Wachusett Community College is now accepting applications for a new veterinary technician program it says will help train people for high-demand jobs.
The two-year program prepares students to take a national exam certifying them as veterinary technicians, according to a Wednesday release from the college. Students will have access to a lab and a synthetic canine, which they can practice on while they learn the intricacies of surgery and other procedures.
Veterinary technicians are in high demand, according to the college. Employment in field is expected to grow by 19 percent per year. MWCC’s program costs $8,700 per year, which it said is about $60,000 less than the two-year veterinary technician program at a Worcester four-year college.
The state Workforce Skills Cabinet helped make the program possible by granting $340,781 to the college for lab space and the synthetic canine.
