MTD Micro Molding in Charlton was recently named to Inc. 5000's list of the fastest growing companies in the country, capturing the 4,735th spot on the list. The company has grown by 48 percent over the last three years. In an interview, President Dennis Tully talked about how the company has been able to grow despite changes in manufacturing.
MTD is a contract manufacturer that specializes in problem solving for the micro-medical device market. With medical device part designs continuing to get smaller, more intricate, and requiring more complex and exotic materials, MTD is a strategic partner for bringing the smallest, most critical, cutting-edge devices to life. We are vertically integrated with tooling and molding in-house at our facility in Charlton and are uniquely specialized in micro-injection molding bioabsorbable and drug-delivery applications.
Thank you! Hard work, attention to detail and continuously pushing the edge of science have allowed us to grow. The growth is also attributable to many of our development projects that were in the pipeline, advancing to production. Congratulations are in order for the entire MTD team.
Near future plans for expansion include a 12,000-square-foot addition to the existing building in Charlton, complete with a new tooling department, additional cleanroom manufacturing space, more material storage and conference space, and a fitness center for employees.
In order to control and reduce manufacturing costs, we incorporate cameras and automation into our processes. MTD runs 24/7, but is only manned Monday through Friday each week. Outsourcing jobs is really not an option for us - we depend on highly skilled, technical people to bring these micro designs to life. Our expert staff continues to lead the way in manufacturing micro molded products at the micron level, creating some of the tiniest and most precise medical device components in the world.
MTD was founded in 1972 as Miniature Tool & Die in the basement of Richard J. Tully’s 200-year-old Colonial home in Charlton. The main product at that time was making connector molds for the electronics industry. The company ventured into the then-little-known niche of building micro molds in the late 1990s and started micro injection molding in the early 2000s. The name was changed to MTD Micro Molding in 2010 with the company’s exclusive focus on medical micro molding.
Today, every high-tech company needs to be semi-automated to compete. Automation has become a significant part of every process at our facility and has allowed our company to grow and keep operating costs competitive.
