ARLENE A. BETTERIDGE, has been named executive director of The Shine Initiative. The initiative is a fund within the United Way of North Central Massachusetts that promotes mental illness awareness, treatment and support. Betteridge was previously executive director of the Performing Arts School of Worcester. She has a master’s degree in mental health, bachelor’s in education

 

HAROLD M. WINGOOD, the dean of admissions and financial aid at Clark University in Worcester, will leave the college to become executive director of the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering on July 1. Wingood has been with Clark since 1995. He helped create the University Park Campus School, a grade seven through 12 school in Clark’s Main South neighborhood that runs as a collaboration between the university and the city’s public school system.

Engineering firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. has appointed CRAIG LIZOTTE as manager of land development at its Worcester office. Lizotte previously worked from the firm’s Watertown office, managing projects around the state. In his new position, the company says he will build on its growth in Central Massachusetts. He has 19 years of experience in civil and environmental engineering projects in a variety of markets including commercial, residential, industrial and sports and entertainment.

Miller Fence Co. of Worcester has promoted KIMBERLY MILLER to vice president. Miller, daughter of company president Joseph P. Miller, has worked for the company for 10 years, taking on tasks including building and installing fence, outdoor sales and office and managerial work. Miller has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Assumption College in Worcester. Miller Fence was founded by the current president’s father, Joseph Miller, in 1967.

MARK O’CONNELL, the president and CEO of Hudson-based Avidia Bank, has joined the board of directors of the Depositors Insurance Fund, which provides excess deposit insurance to 68 Massachusetts savings banks. O’Connell joined Hudson Savings Bank in 1998 and became CEO in 2004. Hudson Savings merged with Westborough Bank in 2007 to form Avidia.

HOWARD L. LEVINE, president of BioProcess Technology Consultants Inc. in Acton, has joined the board of directors of Protein Sciences Corp., the developer of influenza vaccines, including one targeting swine flu. Levine is an expert in biologics development and manufacturing. Before founding BioProcess Technology Consultants, he was vice president of manufacturing operations at Repligen Corp., and he has also worked for Genetech, Amgen and Xoma.

An Assumption College project has given alumna DIANNE BRUCE, executive director of Edward Street Child Services in Worcester, an award for her service to the community. The award comes from the Passport Project, a collaboration between Assumption’s office of multicultural affairs and its women’s studies program that works to raise awareness of women’s issues around the world.

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts has named Anna Maria College President JACK P. CALARESO to its executive committee of college and university presidents. Calareso has been president of the Paxton college since 2007. He previously served as president of Ohio Dominican University and Briar Cliff University in Iowa.

LYDIA M. YOUNG, a pediatrician with Chandler Pediatrics in Worcester and chief of the division of community pediatrics at UMass Memorial Medical Center, has been elected vice president of the Massachusetts Medical Society. Young has served in a variety of leadership positions in the medical community. She has been president of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and of the Worcester District Medical Society.

Capaccio Environmental Engineering Inc., a Marlborough environmental, health and safety consulting company, has hired GEOFFREY J. GILBERT and JILL SEIFERT VERNES. Gilbert was hired as a senior environmental, health and safety scientist. He will be responsible for evaluating and implementing health and safety programs and trainings. Vernes will work as an environmental scientist, implementing environmental compliance, site assessment and remediation services and preparing air emission calculations and regulatory reporting.

GraftonTimes.com, a new online newspaper devoted to the town of Grafton, has hired BEN LEVERONE as advertising sales manager. Leverone previously worked for Monster.com for eight years. He lives in Milford with his wife and two-year-old son. With the new hire, the staff of the online paper now stands at four.
