Mount Wachusett Nets STEM Grant

Mount Wachusett Community College (MWCC) said it has been awarded a $640,000 federal grant to provide scholarships and support services to students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The five-year grant, from the National Science Foundation, is the largest MWCC has received from that agency. The grant aims to keep associate's degree students on track to graduate within two or three years, and also to facilitate transfers to four-year colleges or universities after graduation from MWCC.

The Gardner-based community college will recruit 30 STEM students a year into its biotech, computer information systems, pre-engineering and natural resources majors.

Participating students will be eligible for faculty mentoring, professional and peer tutoring and other services.

The grant comes on the heels of an announcement last fall that the state would provide $37.9 million to MWCC to build a new science and technology building in Gardner. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2014.
