Mount Wachusett Community College is adding a mathematics associate degree for the first time this fall.
The new math degree was designed to prepare students to easily transfer to a four-year college, the Gardner school said. Through the program, Mount Wachusett students will be able to take the core math courses four-year institutions recommend for the first two years of study under the state's MassTransfer program, which helps students easily continue on from a community college to earn a bachelor's degree.
The math course of study will include calculus, statistics, physics, computer programming and other courses.
Mount Wachusett said the new math degree will expand options for science students and add to its STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — offerings.
Jobs for mathematicians and statisticians are expected to grow by one-third from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
