More Women Serve On Mass. Company Boards

The percentage of board seats held by women at the 100 largest companies in Massachusetts grew 1.6 percent to 12.7 percent in 2012, according to The Boston Club.

The club, a New England organization of professional women, released its annual findings in the 10th anniversary issue of its publication title "Unfinished Business."

The report, The 2012 Census of Women Directors and Executive Officers of Massachusetts Public Companies, shows that 65 of the top 100 Bay State companies now have one or more women directors – the highest number ever. Fifty-nine companies reported boards that included women directors in 2011.

The increase in the number of women holding executive officer positions at top companies was more modest. Just 9.9 percent of the largest companies in Massachusetts employee female executive officers, an increase of 0.3 percent over 2011, according to The Boston Club.

"We take great satisfaction in the positive changes that have occurred this year," said JoAnn Cavallaro, president of The Boston Club. "There is still, however, a lot of work to do. We continue to be committed ourselves to getting more women appointed to the boards of companies in Massachusetts and across the country."

Companies that fared better-than-average concerning women serving on their boards of directors this year include Boston Scientific Corp. of Natick, The TJX Cos. Inc. of Framingham and Hologic Inc. of Marlborough, which reported at least 30 percent of their board seats are held by women.
