The number of women-owned businesses in Massachusetts grew by 5 percent during the past five years and has grown by more than 30 percent since 1997, according to an analysis of U.S. Census data by the American Express OPEN Forum.
The 2011 Census estimates there are 187,000 women-owned businesses in Massachusetts.
Nationally, there are an estimated 8.1-million women-owned businesses, employing 7.6 million workers. That’s a 50 percent jump in the number of firms since 1997.
