More than 200 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Worcester County over the weekend to go along with 21 new deaths, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Worcester County closed May with 11,018 cases, nearly doubling the 5,787 it had to start the month. It ended the month with 767 deaths, up from 265, making it the deadliest month so far through the pandemic.
Across Massachusetts, 128 new deaths reported over the weekend brings that total number to 6,846, according to DPH. The state recorded 3,284 deaths in May, equal to about 106 per day.
The state's 1,453 new cases reported over the weekend bring the total so far to 96,965. A total of 34,760 cases were recorded for the month across Massachusetts.
In the city of Worcester, 97 new cases were recorded over the weekend, bringing the total number of cases so far to 4,189.
Hospitalizations for coronavirus in Central Massachusetts are continuing a slow decline.
UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester had 103 inpatient coronavirus cases Sunday, with 40 in intensive care. Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester had 56 inpatient cases and 10 in intensive care.
Elsewhere, MetroWest Medical Center's Framingham and Natick hospitals had a combined 45 inpatient cases and 13 in the ICU. Marlborough Hospital had 20 and nine, respectively.
Nationwide, cases were nearing 1.8 million on Monday morning with more than 104,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Worldwide, cases have topped 6.2 million with nearly 373,000 deaths.
