Twenty-one new communities have been added to the state’s Green Communities program, including four in Central Massachusetts.
Ayer, Mendon, Millbury and Sherborn were among the communities named today to join the program. Now, 74 of the state’s 351 cities and towns are considered Green Communities.
As part of the designation, each of the communities in the region received a grant worth between $137,000 and $167,000.
To become eligible for the program, the community must commit to five steps, including reducing energy usage by 20 percent, installing new zoning regulations to allow renewable energy projects to be built and promising to purchase environmentally-friendly vehicles, among others.
