Money Talks

If you want to thank someone for a job well done, nothing beats cash.

That's according to CFOs surveyed by the Accountemps staffing firm. Asked about the best way to reward an accounting team after a major project, 46 percent of the respondents picked a bonus. Giving extra time off and holding a departmental lunch or social gathering were the next most popular answers, at 21 and 15 percent respectively.

The survey, conducted for Accountemps by an independent research firm, included responses from 1,400 CFOs of U.S. companies with more than 20 employees.

Accountemps Chairman Max Messmer said bonuses can be a good way to motivate employees who have had to take on more work because of layoffs. But for companies that can't afford the extra expenditure he said time off or just an office party can also boost spirits.
