The Julia Bancroft Apartments, a 60-unit mixed-income development for seniors 62 and older, is opening at 3 Vinal St. in Auburn.
The project is led by the Boston office of Philadelphia-based developer Pennrose.
The development will offer 45 units for residents at or below 60% of area median income, with the remainder being market-rate. Four of the affordable apartments have been set aside for Community Based Housing and seven are designated as accessible units, according to a Thursday press release from the developer.
As part of the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community development, the Community Based Housing program provides funding for the development of integrated housing for people with disabilities, including elders, with priority for individuals who are in institutions, nursing facilities or at risk of institutionalization, according to the Massachusetts Housing and Community Development website.
According to the press release, the development, which is a rehabilitation of a 1920’s- era school building along with a modern addition, is designed to meet LEED Silver sustainability standards.
“Julia Bancroft was designed to help address the widespread shortage of affordable housing in Massachusetts, where the National Low Income Housing Coalition estimates that 38% of extremely low-income renter households are senior citizens,” the company said in the press release.
In May, Pennrose opened another redevelopment of an Auburn school building at 10 Church St. The Mary D. Stone Apartments offers 55 mixed-income apartments for seniors 62 and over.
The Town of Auburn and the developer are holding a grand opening ceremony on Friday featuring representatives from Pennrose and local government officials.
