Mission Chapel approved for $4.4M apartment complex project

Mission Chapel on the corner of Summer and Bridge Street will be redeveloped into a seven-unit apartment complex.
The Worcester Planning Board on Wednesday approved the renovation of the historic Mission Chapel on Summer Street, which will consist of the former church’s conversion into a seven-unit apartment complex.
All the apartments will be market-rate and the project will involve a $4.4-million investment, according to the presentation by project manager Dave Traggorth of Boston-based Traggorth Companies.
Located at 205 Summer St., the church was built in the mid-1800s, but has been vacant for decades with numerous owners.
The firm bought the 9,000-square-foot church in May 2019 for $337,500 and received a 40% tax exemption over eight years for the project, according to the application submitted to the Planning Board in September.
Traggorth Companies has renovated several other historic buildings in Chelsea, Williamstown, and Boston.
Planning Board member Kevin Aguirre voiced a concern over all the units being market-rate, saying the area was in need of more affordable housing, but the board voted unanimously in favor.
