Millbury has landed a $1-million state grant to both help combat climate change and contribute to the town’s downtown revitalization efforts.

The grant, from the Massachusetts Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program will help fund the Armory Village Green infrastructure project to help reduce flooding and stormwater runoff to the Blackstone River.

The grant, part of $12 million awarded to Massachusetts communities, will fund green infrastructure elements for the project, including stormwater planters, bioretention bump-outs, rain gardens, tree box filters, tree planting and porous pavement.

“While Massachusetts continues to be a leader in pursuing clean energy options, it’s also important to help communities identify opportunities to reduce risks and to build resilience against potential threats such as extreme weather and climate-related hazards,” State Sen. Michael Moore (D-Millbury) said in a statement. “This funding through the MVP program will go a long way to help my hometown of Millbury adapt to climate change, and to implement recommendations previously identified by the community.”

Of the $12 million awarded, $1.7 million was given to 65 communities to pursue a community-led planning process to identify vulnerabilities to climate change.

The remaining $10.3 million was given to 34 communities that had completed the planning process and were ready to move ahead on improvement projects.
