Milford Regional to begin offering travel medicine services

Milford Regional Physician Group has added travel medicine services to its infectious disease department, and vaccines for foreign travel are now available at the Milford Regional Medical Center.

In addition the vaccines, medications for travel and pre-travel counseling will be offered, according to a Thursday press release from the physician group. This is the first time Milford Regional has offered travel services.

“We encourage those who are traveling to resource-limited areas to seek medical advice before they go. Taking certain precautions before you leave can avoid a number of minor illnesses that could potentially interfere with a traveler’s plans, and most importantly help to prevent life-threatening illnesses like malaria, typhoid fever or yellow fever,” Dr. Fozia Qamar, an infectious disease and tropical medicine physician at Milford Regional, said in the press release.

Immunizations available include those for hepatitis A/B, measles, typhoid, influenza, meningitis, and other life-threatening diseases for foreign travelers.

Consultation services are available, with country-specific advice including information about safe food and water consumption, malaria prevention, and altitude sickness.
