Milford Regional Medical Center has secured state approval for a maternal continuing care nursery, allowing it to offer higher-level care for babies.
The new licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, which Milford Regional announced Aug. 25, allows the hospital to operate a Level IB continuing care nursery in its maternity center. The designation allows Milford Regional to offer a broader range of services, including for premature babies born at 35 weeks and beyond, or those with health issues.
The hospital's center's equipment includes isolettes, oxygen therapy, IV infusion pumps, cardiopulmonary monitors, and phototherapy lights for those with high bilirubin levels, which can indicate liver damage or disease.
Nurseries in Level II or above are able to care for babies born even more prematurely, or those needing more specialized care. UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester is a Level III, for example, and able to care for babies born before their 32nd week.
