Milford Regional gets top marks for stroke care

Milford Regional Medical Center has been recognized for its stroke care by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

The hospital said Tuesday it has again received the organizations’ gold-plus achievement level, which recognizes hospitals for consistent compliance with the groups’ standards for heart and stroke care.

Those measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients, the hospital said.

According to the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth-highest cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. Nearly 2,500 Massachusetts residents died of a stroke in 2016, according to the latest data from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
