Milford today became the first community in Massachusetts to offer Smart911, a national safety service that its Framingham-based manufacturer says provides more effective emergency response and opens up direct communication between public safety officials and citizens.
Introduced nearly three years ago by Rave Mobile Safety of Framingham, Smart911 has been adopted in 29 states and in more than 350 municipalities, according to a statement from Rave. The system has been credited with saving the life of a man in Nashville. It has also helped locate a missing child in Arkansas, Rave said.
“Smart911 provides our 9-1-1 call takers and emergency responders with more detailed information about a citizen in need, which translates into faster, more precise emergency response that can avoid tragedy and save lives," Milford Selectman Brian Murray said.
Smart911 allows citizens to create a safety profile at www.smart911.com for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 and response teams to have in the event of an emergency, according to Rave. When a citizen makes an emergency call, their profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right response teams to the right location with the right information. That information can include the number of people who live in a home, the locations of bedrooms and medical conditions of the inhabitants.
"When citizens put more information in the hands of emergency responders prior to an emergency, they are enabling faster and more knowledgeable response for themselves and their families," said Tom Axbey, Rave’s president and CEO. "We applaud Milford … for bringing greater safety and peace-of-mind to residents.”
